Chicago Restaurant Favorites
I have spent 8 years living in Chicago and have few favorite places I would love to share them with anyone who is willing to listen.
Piece Pizza – Pizza place with a brewery and a loud bar atmosphere.
Kelly and I can’t go here without a) getting a little tipsy and b) eating insane amounts of pizza. This place is perpetually busy, which would be annoying except it gives you an excuse to hang out at the bar and have a beer or two while you wait. They have my favorite beer here: Camel Toe. It is 9.5 % ABV, which would explain the tipsiness issue…. Beer aside, the pizza alone is worth going for. They serve extra-big square pizzas, with an emphasis on building your own. We found our dream combination: Red sauce, mushrooms, banana peppers, garlic, and mozzarella. Recommend.
Amitabul – Casual and quiet atmosphere with healthy Korean vegan food.
Amitabul is definitely a hike from downtown Chicago, so you kind of need to be in the mood to go exploring if you want to eat there. But, it is absolutely one of a kind so I think it’s worth going to. Pretty much all of the dishes are large portions of veggies and/or noodles in delicious sauce. I have tried a lot of things on the menu, but once I discovered Dr. K’s soup I have been unable to order anything else. It is outstanding. It is spicy and comes in GIGANTIC proportions, I always get at least 2 meals out of it.
Yummy Yummy – Super casual chinese take out
This is my go-to for take out Chinese food. They have a “regular” menu, and then they have the same menu duplicated with fake meats. I have never found another place with vegetarian hot and sour soup, which is one of the things I miss most from meat-eating days. The restaurant itself is tiny and uninspiring, so I recommend this for takeout. Other good menu options: Kimchi Fried Rice, General Tso’s Soy Protein, and the Vegetarian Wonton Soup.
Bavettes – Fancy downtown Chicago restaurant with an old school feel
This is my favorite place to go out to a nice dinner in downtown Chicago. It is dark, romantic, and has a classic feel – and the food is amazing. What more could you ask for? Great date spot. A heads up – not a ton of vegetarian options so check the menu before going. And if you eat seafood – the crab stuffed avocado is unbelievable.
